Carpenter Star Quilts

Gail finished the quilting on her Carpenter Star Quilt that she made in my class at Cathy's Sew and Vac. This is a class that I repeated, original pattern by Kathie Holland of Inspired by Antique Quilts. Completely quilted by Gail using a walking foot and free motion quilting...

And this is a picture that Kathy sent to me of a quilt she made after the class on her own! Pieced, quilting and binding all done by Kathy.
I am so proud of both Gail and Kathy for completing their quilts and jumping right in with FMQing.
Kathy T is right behind them with a black, red and white quilt she made in the same class. I saw it yesterday and it is beautiful. Well done ladies!!!

Have a great Labor Day weekend

Classes at Cathy's

Classes at Cathy's Sew and Vac / Honey Run Quilters, Chico CA
Two of my classes at Cathy's this week were sew much fun! Thursday was the third session of the Carpenter's Star quilt we are making in Quilting 101 class ~ putting on borders. We added an inner and a second outer border...
This is Kathy W's quilt with the inner borders sewn on and one outer border.
She emailed that all her borders are on now :0) and she is ready for quilting in our next session! Love her enthusiasm and this is her first ever quilt!!! I'd say she is a natural for quilting. Wouldn't you agree?
This is my top with two borders on and the side borders up on the design wall next to the top. They are now pieced to length and attached.

More pics after the next class including Kathy T's quilt top. She was not ready for a photo at the end of class and promised to send one when her top is together. Have fun on your trip to the Eastcoast!

Yesterday, Saturday was my Paper Piecing class. After a simple practice piece we made flower pots designed by Anja Townrow. Her book, Dutch Flower Pot is wonderful and available at Amazon. Click the book title for the link to Amazon or Anja's name for a link to her website. TIA

Here is Takako's beautiful flower pot. She plans to buy Anja's book :0)

Here is Claudia's flower pot, not quite finished in class. I cropped the second photo. She emailed last night that she did finish her block when she got home and is happy with the result :0) Love the fabrics!

Quilting 101

Last week Thursday was the second session of my Quilting 101 class at Cathy's Sew and Vac ~ Honey Run Quilters. Two students are brand new to quilting! Gail is rotary cutting for the first time! "Lock the blade" was repeated often :0) For this second class session I was just amazed at their progress!

With permission, we are making a quilt designed by Kathie Holland. Here is a photo of the new quilt that I am making along with the class. I finished the rows this morning. Next class session will be adding two borders...
I reversed the lights and darks for my quilt. I plan to name it Autumn Sunset. Sort of scrappy, used a few hand dyes from a batik swap and a couple of FQs from my stash. Not quite enough fabric so it's "scrappier" at the bottom!

Following are the student's quilts in progress. These are on design walls and we are auditioning the blocks for placement and value before sewing them together.
These photos are all from the first layouts. Kathy made a few changes.
This is Kathy's in blues and tan/browns
Kathy T made quite a few changes. The points of the center star are all in the black, white and red stripe fabric. She also changed out some of the light squares.  The result was a better definition of the star shapes.
Kathy T's in black white and red
Here you see Gail's first layouts with her version in browns. Her final layout ended up still different than these two...

Once they saw how it worked using my digital camera to view the blocks for value, they all pulled out their camera phones and took pictures themselves! I of course got caught up in their work and neglected to take more pictures of their progress. We meet again on April 26 and I will take photos of their tops, probably with borders by the end of class! Every one of them are doing great!!!

Here is a picture of my finished sample quilt:
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. After a week of rain, we have some sun! Yea!!! We plan to take mom out to Bidwell Park for a walk with my dog Crystal.

March UFO finish

Finished the binding this evening on my March UFO
for Judy's 2012 UFO Challenge at Patchwork Times
Simple Scrappy Pleasures ~ 40 x 44
Quilt #8 ~ This little quilt started out as a 2002 BOM from Claudia's Quilt Shoppe. The pattern is still available! Made with throw away scraps from a company where I worked as a seamstress in the 1980s, most of the fabrics are vintage calico. The backing is also vintage, a larger piece I purchased at that time.
I did add a yellow fabric that was probably from the later 90s and the solid navy blue binding is new. There wasn't enough of the navy blue fabrics for the binding and I felt it needed to be dark. Looking at it now, I am sorry I added that yellow in 2002. It would have been good that all the fabrics were from the same time era.
The borders are quilted with spools of thread, the inner border is quilted with small baskets (hard to see blue on blue) and I used a feathered meander in the center. Added a sleeve so I can hang this one along with Connected Friends. Happy with a finish and one more quilt rescued from the closet :0)

Next up is UFO # 10 ~ Another BOM called Galactic Twinkle. Poke here to go to Judy's Patchwork Times to see what other quilters have completed for March.

This morning was the first session of a quilt class I teach at Cathy's Sew and Vac. The quilt, Black White and Red All Around is designed by Kathie Holland. Here are the fabrics I pulled to make the quilt along with the class:
Gail is making hers in browns and tans, Kathy in blues and creams and Kathy T is doing black, white and red. Thank you Kathie for your permission. Everyone loves your quilt design!

Temecula Quilt Co posted the last Blessings Basket block and tomorrow will post the final part to finish the QAL. Looking forward to then...

ASQG Quilt show 2011 ~ part 4

A few more photos of some of the quilts shown at Annie's Star Quilt Guild ~ Harvest of Quilts ~ October 2011 quilt show in Chico, CA USA
We had close to 300 quilts displayed. Check out all 4 of the posts of the show to see but a few of them. Many were hard to photograph because of the lighting. I had fun with a team of members that set up and took down the quilts for the show.
A quilt I exhibited in the show. Black, White and Red All Around is the quilt I made from black and white fabric charms I swapped with members of Alex Anderson's AAQMB in 2003. The pattern is a design by Kathie Holland ~ Inspired by Antique Quilts ~  http://inspiredbyantiquequilts.blogspot.com/ With Kathie's permission, I also taught this as a class at Cathy's Sew and Vac. Here is a link to a previous post with pics of the quilts made by the class. http://moonbeardesignsandquilting.blogspot.com/2011/07/quilting-class-at-cathys.html

Following is Taren's Floating Curves. I am showing it again, right side up this time and also because it is one of my favorites of the show. Her machine quilting is amazing! I wish you could see it better in the photo.

Here is my mom, enjoying the show!
Hope you have too. Wish there was a way to take better photos to show off machine quilting as well as the quilts themselves. As I work on improving my machine quilting skills and photography, I really appreciate how many talented quilters we have here in the Chico, Paradise and Oroville area.

We also have wonderful vendors that complete the show.
Rabbit Hole, Honeyrun Quilters and Cathy's Sew and Vac are all LQSs in Chico
Morning Star Quilts is located in Paradise and owned by a good friend, Marsha.

Quilting Class at Cathy's

The last in a series of four beginning quilting classes I teach at Cathy's Sew and Vac, we covered machine quilting and binding. The class quilt we made is a quilt design by Kathie Holland ~ Black, White and Red All Around. Thank you Kathie for permission to feature your design. Here are pics of the quilts made in class...

Carol

Darcy

Kristi

Pieced back on Kristi's
Carol made a small wall quilt version using sparkly star fabrics in patriotic colors. She did her machine quilting with blue and silver metallic threads and it's ready for binding! A+

Darcy made a 54 x 54 inch quilt using scrappy black and white prints with the red inner border and a dark black floral print for the outer border. Her quilt is basted and ready for quilting. She used a gorgeous black rose print for the backing and is considering doing free motion from the back following the rose print.

Kristi made the same size quilt and wanted to incorporate Zebra print fabric, a favorite for a member of her family. She placed the Zebra print in the center star and the outer border with a dark print for the star circle. Nice design layout. She also pieced her backing with the Zebra print in the center. Her quilt is also basted and ready for quilting.

We practiced on small quilted pieces first. We did 1/4 inch straight stitch quilting, SID, cross hatch and echo with a walking foot as well as some free motion quilting. I was very impressed with how well everyone took to machine quilting. We also sewed binding on to the quilted practice pieces. Everyone did a beautiful job! A+ for everybody!

Black, White and Red All Around

Saturday was Class #2 for Black, White and Red All Around. Class #3 will cover borders and how to get a quilt top ready for quilting. Class #4 will cover machine quilting and binding.

Here is a picture of a smaller 36 x 36 inch version of Kathie Holland's design that I made out of red, white and blue fabrics. Students have a choice to make this quilt in either size and any 3 colors of their choice.

Here again is a pic of the 54 x 54 inch quilt I made of Kathie's star using 6 inch squares from a black and white swap with members of AAQMB ~ on Alex Anderson's site almost 10 years ago! Can you believe it's been that long ago... so much as changed since then.
The label that is now sewn onto the back of the 54 x 54 quilt
Only for the duration of the class, this quilt is hanging in the classroom at Cathy's Sew and Vac in Chico, CA

One year ago Cathy's Sew and Vac moved to a different location here in Chico. Now in a bigger building they added fabric, notions, patterns, embroidery and ***lots of quilting tools*** to their inventory of sewing machines. Quilt Making 101 is but one of a variety of classes being offered in their new classroom. There are embroidery classes, a Handi Quilter class, even a hat making class offered by other instructors. I am starting a second series of Quilt Making 101 classes on July 10

Color Me Happy is a new BOM coming up, sometime after the summer. I am in the process of making up the quilt sample to present in the classroom... soon!
